Science and technology

Science and technology is mandatory for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

In science and technology, students explore the natural and made worlds. They learn how to apply scientific and technological skills, knowledge and understanding across a broad range of contexts.

Science provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real world problems. The inquiry and skill-based nature of science opens doors to ideas and discoveries.

At New Lambton Public School, we recognise that Science and Technology education has an essential place in the primary curriculum for students to be adequately prepared for life in the 21st century.

Science and technology is the learning area in which our students learn about the natural and man-made environments by investigating, experimenting, designing and using technology.

At New Lambton Public School the need to address community values and to be responsive to local community concerns is recognised.  Students are given opportunities to find out about the world in a systematic way.

Science and Technology education at NLPS helps students to understand themselves and the environment, and provides opportunities for them to develop independent rational thought, scientific concepts and their role in responsible action. It emphasises first-hand experience, investigating, designing, problem-solving and clarifying understandings. We aim to foster individuals’ responsibility for conserving and improving the quality of our environment.

Science and Technology are linked through problem solving by the skills and processes of scientific inquiry and technological design. 


The processes of Working Scientifically and Working Technologically are at the centre of teaching and learning. Students at NLPS develop skills in using the processes of Working Scientifically and Working Technologically through active engagement in a range of contextualised hands-on scientific investigations and design projects.

Knowledge and Understanding

Students develop their scientific and technological understanding about the Natural and Made Environment through applying the processed of Working Scientifically and Working Technologically.

Natural Environment (NE)

Students explore and learn about science as a unique way of answering questions and finding out about phenomena in the natural world, and the importance of scientific evidence in decision making and problem solving.

Physical World – students develop their understanding of heat energy, electricity, forces, light and sound.

Earth and Space – students develop their understanding of the Earth’s dynamic structure and its place in space. They learn about Earth’s changes as a result of natural processes and human activity.

Living World – students develop their understanding of living things. They investigate the diversity of living things and explore their life cycles and structural features.

Made Environment (ME)

Provides areas of focus for students to learn about technologies and their uses relevant to the personal, commercial and global areas of human activity.

Material World – students develop their understanding of the properties of materials, the way they behave and the changes they undergo as well as their uses for people.

Built environments – students develop their understanding about places and spaces, and their uses. People create, construct and modify their surroundings for different purposes and built environments are an important part of our communities and culture.

Information – students develop their understanding about the design and use of information for the purpose of conveying messages. Information and communication systems are fundamental to human activity.

Products – students develop their understanding of products that include objects, systems and artefacts, and the nature of materials and resources used to produce them.
